Varieties commonly grown in New Zealand Bays (Origin: California, 1920) Tree broad, to 6m. Fruit of medium size, round, impressa, light-green, with excellent-flavoured, smooth-textured flesh, almost lemony. Early maturing. Prone to splitting when nearly mature if temperatures are low. The weeping habit of the tree can increase skin damage due to windrub. One of Californias main varieties. Bronceada (Origin: Chile) Regular heavy bearer of large fruit (6001,300g), intermediate skinned. Juicy, sweet cream flesh with good flavour, late maturing, changing colour markedly from yellowgreen to bronzegreen, which makes harvesting easy. Holds well on tree. Good shelf life (due to thick skin) of 1215 days at room temperature, 21 days at 10ºC. Early tree pruning and summer pinching can produce more fruiting laterals, giving increased crops of smaller fruit (500800g). Good resistance to botrytis and anthracnose. A major commercial crop in Chile. Burtons (Origin: Kaitaia, New Zealand) Moderate-sized heart-shaped fruit with a deep stem base cavity, impressa, excellent flavour, moderately seedy with large, loose seeds. Late maturing. Has small flowers that can be hard to find, so difficult to pollinate. Tree has a dense canopy. Shelf life up to 7 days at room temperature. Burtons Favourite (Origin: Kaitaia, New Zealand) Robust tree, relatively free from disease. Good size, evenly shaped impressa fruit, sweet and juicy with excellent flavour, moderately seedy. Matures mid to late season. Heavy cropper, easy to handle, not prone to splitting, with a shelf life up to 7 days at room temperature. Jete (Origin: Canary Islands. Also known as Fino de Jete) Excellent-shaped fruit with juicy, sweet flesh. When mature, black speckles may appear under skin. Matures mid-season. Spains main commercial variety. Reretai (Origin: Kaitaia, New Zealand) Moderate-sized, heart-shaped fruit (450700g) with sweet, juicy, good flavoured flesh, impressa skin thats susceptible to blackening, very seedy (20 per 100g of flesh). Moderate cropper of late maturing fruit with shelf life of 7 days at room temperature, 10 days at 10ºC. Smoothey (Origin: Tauranga, New Zealand) Fruit of good size and shape, tuberculate, with a good flavour. Highly prone to cracking at the stem base. Very seedy. Early maturing. Spain (Origin: California) Heavy cropper of sweet, juicy fruit, with a mild pineapple flavour. Matures midseason, when cold weather can split fruit. White (Origin: California, 1928) Very heavy cropper of large fruit up to 1.8kg, with juicy flesh that can be quite gritty just below the skin, flavour weak, suggesting mango-papaya. Has a low seed count (9 per 100g of flesh). A commercial favourite in California. Next an analysis of the varieties commonly grown New Zealand
