  Planting out

The young grafted trees should be spaced 5–6m apart each way in holes 50–60cm wide that are enriched with organic material. This allows good yields early on, but
pruning is needed to prevent trees becoming overcrowded as they mature.

Trees should be staked when planted out, to maintain an upright, stable position that allows for good root establishment. Just before leaf drop at the end of the first year, at a time when they’re particularly vulnerable to wind damage, stakes should be removed and a simple post and double wire support system put in place to steady the trees as they rapidly grow. When the tree begins to fruit, a strong trunk, branch and root structure will have developed and the support wires can be removed.

In frost-free areas, some recommend seedlings for spring grafting should be planted in their ultimate location in autumn, and grafted in the ground the following spring.
